Multicultural
Initiatives
Organ and tissue donation affects us all. However, some diseases that
can cause the need for an organ transplant affect ethnic minorities at
a higher rate than their Caucasian counterparts. Because conditions such
as hypertension and diabetes are more common among minorities, they are
more likely to develop organ failure. Nearly half of the people on the
national transplant list are minorities. Race is not a criterion for matching
donors with recipients. However, matching organs between members of the
same ethnic group can result in a close match since members of the same
ethnic group are genetically similar to members of their own group than
they are to others.
Do you know:
- More
than half of the 99,000 people on the national transplant waiting list
represent minorities including 34.9% African Americans, 15.5% Hispanic,
2.5% Asian and 2.5% other ethnic backgrounds.
- African
Americans make up 12% of the population and 35% of those waiting a kidney
transplant.
- African
Americans make up 13% of the donors and 18% of the recipients.
- Native
Americans have the highest rate of diabetes in the nation.
- Hispanics
account for 11% of organ donors and 3% tissue donors, yet they are the
fastest growing segment of the national population.
