Transplant
Process
The process of recovering organs from a donor and transplanting them into
recipients is a collaborative, structured effort which includes: OPO transplant
coordinators, transplant surgical team, transplant centers, the donor and
recipients.
- The hospital will report all deaths to the Donor Referral Hotline.
- LCO will send a transplant coordinator to evaluate the medical suitability
of the potential donor. If the potential donor appears to be a candidate
for donation, the coordinator will access the Ohio Donor Registry to
obtain the decedent's donation decision. If the individual's wishes
are unknown, the coordinator will discuss this option with the patient's
family.
- Upon obtaining documentation of first person consent, or family consent,
LCO coordinators will begin the evaluation process. A thorough medical
examination and social history will help determine the suitability of
organs for transplantation.
- Following UNOS guidelines, LCO coordinators will access the UNOS database
and place the donated organs.
- Upon organ placement, LCO coordinators schedule surgical teams to
recover the organs.
- The recovery process is a surgical procedure where the donor is treated
with the utmost respect and dignity. Once the organs are removed, the
incision is sutured. The organs are transported to their respective
transplant centers where recipients will receive their transplant.
- The coordinator makes transportation arrangements for the donor's
body to the funeral home of the family's choice.
- The LCO coordinators provide follow-up information to the donor family
and hospital staff regarding the outcome of the donation.
